Charles Redman Remembered
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden death of Charles Redman.
Charles was a retired consultant gynaecological oncologist who worked in Stoke-on-Trent. He was the colposcopy lead for much of his time there and for many years was involved with the QA regionally and nationally. He was a past president of the European Federation of Colposcopy.
To say Charles was passionate about colposcopy is an understatement.
Until his death he continued to strive to improve patient care, outcomes, guidelines and quality assurance. He achieved this through his teaching, training, research and development of guidelines. He was widely published including many publications in the field of colposcopy across the world.
He was committed to the BSCCP and EFC. Charles was a driving force within the EFC. He facilitated training courses in many European countries and provided training in the UK for our Eastern European colleagues to enable them to develop training programs and produce standards back in their home countries. He was responsible for developing the European guidelines for colposcopy practice and QA. He pioneered the use of the Delphi technique for collecting international views on colposcopy management and as a result producing workable guidelines relevant to all countries. I’m sure we all have memories of completing the surveys.
He was the very best of teachers and mentors. So many BSCCP members have benefited from his knowledge and guidance. He was a tough taskmaster with a strong work ethic who demanded the best and as a result he would get the best out of you as a trainee or research fellow. He was a real team player. He was truly inspirational and gave many trainees and colposcopists in the UK and across Europe a passion for colposcopy and providing the best evidence-based care and upholding of standards.
He was always the life and soul of any social events and no one had dance moves like his!
His legacy will live on after him. RIP.
